Construction Academy

The University of Rhode Island Transportation Center hosts a one-week Construction Academy for rising High School juniors and seniors. Daily transportation to and from a central pick-up point in Providence is available.

The curriculum will include OSHA 10-Hour Certification, Flag Person Certification, Work Zone Safety, Hands on Activities at the Operating Engineers Center, Blue Print Reading, Estimating, Construction Math, Surveying and Layout and Starting your own Construction Business. Supervision of all activities will be by the Program Director, Program Coordinator, interns and industry professionals.

Up to twenty rising 11th and 12th grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the one-week summer program. Scholarships will include the following:

  • Tuition
  • Facility Usage
  • Equipment and Supplies
  • Workshops
  • Field Trip Expenses
  • Meals

Requirements

  • Currently in 11th or 12th grade for the upcoming school year
  • Cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • An interest in Construction, Transportation, or a Technology related career
  • Written essay and transcript or copy of report card

A brief interview with each applicant will be scheduled by the Program Director to be held at the applicant’s home or at the URI Transportation Center.
