Engineering Academy

The University of Rhode Island Transportation Center will host a one-week Engineering Academy for rising High School freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Daily transportation to and from a central pick-up point in Providence is available.

The curriculum will include instruction and activities such as Highway Design, Bridge Design, Traffic Engineering, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, Geotechnical Engineering, Reading a Scale, Blue Print Reading, Surveying & Layout, Preparing an Estimate

Supervision of all activities will be by the Program Director, Program Coordinator, interns and industry professionals.

Up to twenty rising 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the one-week summer program. Scholarships will include the following:

  • Tuition
  • Facility Usage
  • Equipment and Supplies
  • Workshops
  • Field Trip Expenses
  • Meals

Requirements

  • Currently in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade for the upcoming school year
  • Cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • An interest in Math, Science, Engineering or a Transportation related career
  • Have attended Rhode Island Engineering Career Day or the Summer Transportation Institute
  • Written essay and transcript or copy of report card

A brief interview with each applicant will be scheduled by the Program Director to be held at the applicant’s home or at the URI Transportation Center.
