Release Notes for McAfee(R) Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module Version 8.0 Copyright (C) 2005 McAfee, Inc. All Rights Reserved ========================================================== Thank you for using Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module software. This file contains important information regarding this release. We strongly recommend that you read the entire document. IMPORTANT: McAfee does not support automatic upgrading of a pre-release version of the software. To upgrade to a production release of the software, you must first uninstall the existing version of the software. __________________________________________________________ WHAT'S IN THIS FILE - What is the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module? - Installation & System Requirements - Resolved Issues - Known Issues - General - Installation - Patch 10 - ProtectionPilot(TM) - ePolicy Orchestrator(R) - General - .NAP Files - Reports - Upgrading - McAfee Installation Designer(TM) - Submitting Samples to AVERT - Documentation - Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0 Documentation - VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i Documentation - Participating in the McAfee Beta Program - Contact Information - Copyright & Trademark Attributions - License & Patent Information __________________________________________________________ WHAT IS THE ANTI-SPYWARE ENTERPRISE MODULE? The Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module adds on to the VirusScan Enterprise product to extend its ability to detect and take action on potentially unwanted spyware and cookies. Once installed and configured, the module uses the VirusScan Enterprise on-access scanner and on-demand scan tasks in conjunction with the information in the virus definition (DAT) file to detect and take action on spyware and cookies. - Spyware and cookie definitions have been added to the virus definitions (DAT) file, so no additional DAT file is required. - The on-access scanner provides the primary protection against spyware by detecting potentially unwanted spyware in files as they are accessed. You can also specify user-defined detections and exclusions. The on-access scanner does not detect cookies. - In addition to file scanning, you can configure on-demand scan tasks to: - Scan the registry for potentially unwanted spyware-related registry entries that were not previously cleaned. - Scan the cookies folder for potentially unwanted cookies. You can also specify user-defined detections and exclusions. Scanning can be configured and performed directly from VirusScan Enterprise or managed via ePolicy Orchestrator. See the McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0 Guide for more information about how the module works. __________________________________________________________ INSTALLATION AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Please see the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module and the VirusScan Enterprise product documentation for complete information on installation and system requirements. __________________________________________________________ RESOLVED ISSUES The following list describes issues that have been resolved with this current release. 1. ISSUE: When viewing the ePolicy Orchestrator Product Summary Coverage report, it did not indicate whether the evaluation version of the product was current or expired. The product version displayed "XXXX.Eval." RESOLUTION: When the evaluation installation expires, the product version now displays as "XXXX.EXP." __________________________________________________________ KNOWN ISSUES GENERAL 1. This 8.0 version of the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module works only with VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i. It does not work with other versions of VirusScan Enterprise. 2. The VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i on-access scanner must be installed before you can install the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module. If the on-access scanner is not installed, the module installation fails. 3. This version of the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module requires a minimum scanning engine version of 4320, however version 4400 or later is recommended. 4. The Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module’s ability to detect spyware and cookies depends on the definitions in the virus definitions (DAT) file. To ensure that you have the most current spyware and cookie definitions, be certain to perform an update of the DAT file immediately after installing the module, then subsequently perform regular updates. 5. If you want to restore VirusScan Enterprise after installing the Anti-Spyware Module, we recommend that you first remove the module, then use the "Reinstall McAfee VirusScan Enterprise" option to restore VirusScan Enterprise. See the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0 Guide for more information about removing the module. NOTE: We do not recommend using the VirusScan Enterprise "Detect and repair missing or corrupt files" feature for repair after installing the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module as this may result in some files being replaced while others are not. INSTALLATION 1. Two Shield icons may momentarily display in the system tray when you install the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module. One of the Shield icons will have a red line through it to indicate that it is disabled. This is caused by a timing issue between terminating the old instance of SHSTAT and starting a new instance of SHSTAT. Mouse over the two icons to refresh the display and the second disabled icon disappears. PATCH 10 1. If you install Patch 10 after you have already installed the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module, the module is removed. When installing Patch 10, be certain to install it before you install the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module. If you have already installed the module, then install Patch 10, you must re-install the module. PROTECTIONPILOT(TM) 1. This version of the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module will be supported by ProtectionPilot version 1.1 when that version is released. It is not supported by earlier versions of ProtectionPilot. ePOLICY ORCHESTRATOR(R) General 1. If you are using both VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 and 8.0i, and want to use the ePolicy Orchestrator deployment task to install both the 7.1 and 8.0 versions of the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module, you must deploy each version separately. For example: a. Configure the deployment task to install Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 7.1 to clients with VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 and set "Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0" to "Ignore." Confirm the 7.1 installation completed successfully. b. Configure the deployment task again to install Anti-Spyware Module 8.0 to clients with VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i. Confirm the 8.0 installation completed successfully.   You cannot configure the deployment task to install both module versions in the same task. Doing so would cause version 8.0 to take precedence over version 7.1, consequently version 7.1 would not be installed. .NAP Files 1. When using ePolicy Orchestrator to manage VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module, you must install these .NAP files: - VSE800.NAP – This .NAP file contains new information, such as user interface and policy page changes, that are required to configure the module. The new .NAP file replaces the VSE800.NAP file that may already be checked into the ePolicy Orchestrator Repository. Once installed, the new and/or changed policies display in the VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 policy pages. This file is included with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0 installation package. - VSEMAS80.NAP – This .NAP file contains policies that are required to enable compliance reporting of the anti-spyware module. The .NAP file does not contain any actual policies so once it is installed, it can be safely ignored. This file is included with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0 installation package. 2. Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module Policies The Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module is an add-on to VirusScan Enterprise; therefore you configure the module’s policies from the VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 policy pages. NOTE: Although the installation of the VSEMAS80.NAP file creates a "McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0" policy page in the ePolicy Orchestrator Directory, this policy page is used purely for the purposes of enabling compliance reporting of the anti-spyware module. It does not contain any actual policies and can be safely ignored. Reports 1. Where can I find scan results in ePolicy Orchestrator? a. View scan results in the Top Ten Unwanted Programs report that is available in the Report Repository under Anti-Virus - VirusScan8.0. This is one of the extended reports that were made available with VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i and in ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5 or later. This report is available in the Report Repository if you are using ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5 or later. This report is not automatically available in ePolicy Orchestrator 3.0.1 or 3.0.2. If you are using ePolicy Orchestrator 3.0.1 or 3.0.2 to manage the module, and want to use the unwanted program reports that were provided with VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i, you must also install these additional files: NOTE: If you are using VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 with ePolicy Orchestrator 3.0.1 or 3.0.2, you may have previously installed these additional files. Look in the Report Repository under Anti-Virus - VirusScan8.0. If the Top Ten Unwanted Programs report is visible, then you do not need to install these additional files. If you do not find this report, continue with the installation. - VSE800REPORTS.NAP – This .NAP file adds extended reports that are required for reporting unwanted programs. The .NAP file is included with the VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i installation package, or with a valid grant number you can download it from the McAfee Download web site. - VSE800UPDATEFOREPO30.EXE – This executable file fixes an issue with ePolicy Orchestrator that causes the event parser to be incorrectly registered when the extended reports .NAP file is added. You must run VSE800UPDATEFOREPO30.EXE on the computer where ePolicy Orchestrator 3.0.1 or 3.0.2 is installed after you install the VSE800REPORTS.NAP. This executable file is included with the VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i installation package, or with a valid grant number you can download it from the McAfee Download web site. After installing the extended reports .NAP file and running the executable, you must log in to the ePolicy Orchestrator Reporting console using "ePolicy Orchestrator authentication." If you are already logged in, you must log out then log back in. b. The results of scans performed by the McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module are reported under the VirusScan Enterprise product in the ePolicy Orchestrator reports. This is expected behavior. The module is an add-on to the VirusScan Enterprise product, so VirusScan Enterprise collects and reports the data. 2. Data Filtering Use the Data Filter feature when configuring the Top Ten Unwanted Programs report to filter the report results. For example, you can use the filter to just show cookies or omit them from the report. Use this syntax to filter cookies in the report: Data Filter = Detection Tab – Starting With (or Not Starting With) - Cookie Upgrading 1. When upgrading from VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 7.1 installed to VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module 8.0, the upgrade sequence is as follows: Initial conditions: a. Client computer with: - VirusScan Enterprise version 7.1 with the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module version 7.1. - Common Management Agent version 3.5.0. b. ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 server deployment task set to install VirusScan Enterprise version 8.0i and the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module version 8.0 on the client computer. From the client computer: a. Common Management Agent 3.5.0 gets the new deployment task and sets it up on queue, if scheduled to run at a specific time. b. Deployment task is invoked and begins the VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i installation. c. After VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i successfully installs, Common Management Agent 3.5.0 initiates an "Update now" task to check for any product updates: Default Repository = ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 server. d. After the "Update" task completes, the installation of the Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module version 8.0 begins. e. When the deployment task completes, the Common Management Agent 3.5.0 reports a new Anti-Virus product is installed on the next ASCI to ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0, and updates client computer properties on the ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 console. Depending on the quality and type of network connection between the ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 server and the client computer, you can take the following steps to ensure that everything is installed as expected: - From ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 Deployment Task Settings, select and enable the "Run this task at" option. - From ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 Deployment Task Settings, select and enable the "Run missed task" option. MCAFEE INSTALLATION DESIGNER(TM) 1. By default, when you create an Anti-Spyware Enterprise Module package with McAfee Installation Designer, then deploy that package via ePolicy Orchestrator, the installation is loud. To deploy the package silently, use command line arguments, such as /S, on the "Add Program" page while creating the package in the McAfee Installation Designer. __________________________________________________________ SUBMITTING SAMPLES TO AVERT If you find a spyware application or cookie that is not being detected with the current DAT file, you can submit a sample of it to the Anti-Virus & Vulnerability Emergency Response Team (AVERT) through WebImmune. AVERT analyzes the sample and considers it for inclusion in the DAT file. If the module detects something that you think it should not detect, you can also submit a sample of it to AVERT through WebImmune. They will analyze it and consider excluding it from the DAT file. NOTE: When you submit samples to AVERT, they analyze those samples and use the information to improve the content of the DAT file. To submit a sample to AVERT: - WebImmune. This is the preferred method to submit samples to AVERT as it provides the fastest turnaround time on sample reviews, and provides historical information of all samples that you have submitted. By accessing https://webimmune.net/default.asp and creating a free account you will be able to upload files directly to AVERT’s automated systems for review. If the automated system is unable to determine a threat exists then the issue will be escalated to AVERT analysts. More information about WebImmune can be found at: https://www.webimmune.net/faqs - E-mail. You can send e-mails directly to AVERT’s automated systems for review. If the automated system is unable to determine a threat exists then the issue will be escalated to AVERT analysts. When submitting the sample via e-mail, you can send it to the global e-mail address at: virus_research@avertlabs.com Or you can get additional regional addresses from the WebImmune web site. - Standard Mail. This is the least preferred method. Submitting samples in this way causes the longest turnaround time for review of your sample. __________________________________________________________ DOCUMENTATION Documentation is included on the product CD and/or is available with a valid grant number from the McAfee download site: https://secure.nai.com/us/forms/downloads/upgrades/login.asp NOTE: Electronic copies of all product manuals are saved as Adobe Acrobat .PDF files.
