Community Partner Resources

Untitled Document

The Feinstein Center for Service Learning is committed to working with community partners in various ways in order to meet the needs of Rhode Island communities. Several methods of collaboration are listed below. Feel free to contact us at any point with questions about additional opportunities to work in partnership with the University of Rhode Island Feinstein Center for Service Learning.

Clearinghouse for Volunteers
The Clearinghouse for Volunteers works to assist individual students, student groups and classes find one-time or long-term service projects in the community. Center staff do this by working one-on-one with students, faculty and staff, as well as by maintaining a volunteer listserv and agency database.

  • Volunteer Listserv: The Clearinghouse for Volunteers maintains a Volunteer Listserv of students interested in volunteer opportunities and regularly emails students about upcoming opportunities to serve the community. To have your project emailed to the listserv simply email the project details to cfv@etal.uri.edu.
  • Agency Database: The Clearinghouse for Volunteers also maintains an Agency Database in order to best provide students, faculty and staff with the most up-to-date information related to volunteer opportunities, internships, jobs and agency contacts. To add your agency to this database or update information please complete the following Community Partner Contact Update & Volunteer Needs form.

  • AmeriCorps: Students have the opportunity to participate in a part-time AmeriCorps program called Scholarships for Service. Through SFS, students complete 300 hours of service over one year with a community agency. In return, upon completion of the 300 hours of service the Corps Member receives a $1000 education award.
  • Career Services: RhodyNet: Post your volunteer opportunity, internship or career opportunity on the University of Rhode Island Career Services RhodyNet. Visit www.career.uri.edu and click on the RhodyNet logo on the main page or contact Career Services.

URI 101: Feinstein Enriching America Program
The URI 101: Traditions and Transformations course introduces first-year students to the traditions of higher education and academic culture as well as significant societal and personal issues that influence their college experience. Created by Alan Shawn Feinstein in 1995, FEAP works to ensure that each entering URI freshman, through the required URI 101 course, will be provided an opportunity to serve the community with their peers and reflect upon that experience. Last fall, over 2,900 freshmen, from roughly 125 URI 101 classes, completed over 14,000 hours of community service with 39 community agencies. Projects are selected every Spring.

Service Learning Classes
Many classes at the University of Rhode Island have an optional or required service learning component. Service Learning is a type of experiential education that extends the walls of the classroom out into the community, creating a structured environment for students to meet community needs while applying classroom theory to practice. The community need or issue addressed is intentionally chosen in order to allow students the opportunity to make connections to the course curriculum and/or their intended major. Faculty will often use the Clearinghouse for Volunteers Agency Database to enhance the search for a community partner.
If you are interested in any of the opportunities above or would like additional information contact the Clearinghouse for Volunteers, cfv@etal.uri.edu or 401-874-2568.
