First Book URI is now a URI Student Senate recognized club! Join today and help local children receive new books to ignite their love of reading and learning! Interested? Email uri@firstbook.org or visit us on Facebook!
The University of Rhode Island and the Feinstein Center for Service Learning are very proud to be the home of First Book URI. First Book URI fundraises money and grants it out to local Rhode Island schools and community programs serving children from low-income families.
Did you know that in low income communities the ratio of books to children is 1 book for every 300 children? Want to help change that statistic? Visit our Rhody Reads fundraising page on Books for Kids/Books for Keeps and donate online to help local children receive new books to ignite their love of reading and learning! Every $10 provides 4-6 new books to one child! Go to www.firstbook.org and click on the Books for Kids/Books for Keeps link on the left and then search for Rhody Reads under the team list.

First Book is a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. We provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.

First Book was founded in 1992. The First Book model was developed to leverage the work of local heroes who reach children through existing literacy programs in a variety of settings, such as Head Start centers, libraries, soup kitchens, churches, housing projects, and afterschool initiatives. Working through this vast network of organizations, First Book plays a critical role in transforming the quality of preschool and after-school programs nationwide.
