History

In 1995 Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein generously endowed the service learning component of URI 101, creating the Feinstein Enriching America Program and the Feinstein Center for Service Learning. With the endowment, Mr. Feinstein insured that each URI student would have the opportunity to be involved in a meaningful community service activity with their class, to reflect upon that experience, and to have the forum to share their thoughts and feelings with other students.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Feinstein Center for Service Learning is to create an engaged campus community through: intentionally planned service and community engagement that fosters student leadership; support for faculty scholarship in service learning; and direct service and advocacy work that meets local, state, national and global community needs. It is the belief of the Feinstein Center for Service Learning that active involvement with community issues builds civic responsibility, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills while fostering an appreciation of larger social issues.

The Feinstein Center for Service Learning, housed under the umbrella of University College and the Office of Internships and Experiential Education, is also home to the Clearinghouse for Volunteers and Jumpstart URI.
