Jumpstart URI Celebrates its 10th year at URI!

What is Jumpstart?

  • Jumpstart is a national non-profit organization working toward the day when every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.
  • Jumpstart recruits, trains, and supports college students to serve as part-time AmeriCorps members, working directly with and supporting young children in early childhood education programs.
  • Jumpstart members complete 300 hours of service with a partner child at a local RI Headstart or Pre-School center.
  • URI Jumpstart team members can receive federal work-study funds or credit for their participation. Additionally, upon successful completion of the year, team members receive a $1,175 AmeriCorps education award. 

General Information for Jumpstart URI

  • All majors welcome!
  • Full academic year program (September-May)
  • Complete 300 hours of service (10-12 hours/week)
  • Earn an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1175 upon successful completion
  • Earn 6 free elective credits in CSV 302 (graded)
  • Use awarded work-study funds (if applicable)
  • Jumpstart training provided prior to working in pre-schools
  • All non-returning Jumpstart Corps Members must enroll in the CSV 302 Jumpstart course

Steps to Join Jumpstart URI 2012-2013!
1. Decide if Jumpstart URI fits into your schedule for FALL 2012!You should only select 1 of the following options for the ENTIRE 2012-2013 YEAR*:

OPTION A
Jumpstart Sessions: M/W 3pm-5:30pm**
CSV 302: T/TH 3:30pm-4:45pm

OPTION B
Jumpstart Sessions: T/TH 12:15pm-2:45pm
CSV 302: M/W 1pm-2:15pm

OPTION C
Jumpstart Sessions: T/TH 3pm-5:30pm
CSV 302: M/W 1pm-2:15pm

*If you have a conflict, do not let that stop you from applying! Make an appointment to meet with Catherine Cutlip or Holly Hernandez to discuss other options.

**Jumpstart Session time does not include drive time to and from pre-school. Preschool placements usually depend on schedules

2. Complete Jumpstart application for Corps Members

3. Schedule an interview with Jumpstart Site Staff (Roosevelt Hall 133/002B)

4. Accept an offer as a 2012-2013 Corps Member, if presented by Jumpstart Site Staff

5. Select a Jumpstart Option that fits into your Fall academic schedule

6. Use course permission # given to you by Jumpstart staff to register for online CSV course

7. Provide Jumpstart Site Staff with copies of the following required documents:
  * Copy of Birth Certificate + Copy of current Drivers License
  **See Holly or Cat for complete list of acceptable documents for substitutions
  * Copy of Car Insurance ONLY IF driving to or from preschool
  * Copy of Social Security Card ONLY IF using awarded work-study funds
  **Enrollment not considered final until all required paperwork is received.
