Backup and Restore your WebCT Course

(Copy the course materials from one WebCT course to another)

The benefits of backup and restore a WebCT course are -

  • Keeping your students' records (such as on-line quiz, assignments, participation in discussion...etc.). When in need, you can restore the backup file to retrieve the information.
  • Copying your course materials from one WebCT course to another.
  • Carrying it with you to other WebCT institutes

Before backing up, you have an option to remove the records of  old students, old discussions, old quiz results...etc. via Reset Course (from Control Panel).

Note:

  • If you wish to keep your students' records, do not perform the Reset Course.
  • If you copy the course materials from one WebCT course to another, you can perform the Reset Course in the new cours.

The Reset Course feature enables you to delete information from various sections of your course. This feature is particularly useful when you've finished teaching a course and want to clear out old student records and assignments. Click Reset Course under Manage Course in the Expanded Control Panel. You can reset the items below. Simply check the box next to the item and click Reset.

Create a Backup

    1. Login to WebCT.
    2. Select the Course Functions tab in your myWebCT page.
    3. Select the course you wish to backup.
    4. Click the "Create Backups" option in the right column.
    5. If you already have a backup file created, you will see an error message "Error: A backup will not be created for the course XXXXXX  (2071-URIPS-xxx-nnn-SECnnnn-nnnn).
There is currently a restriction of 1 backups per course. Please delete one or more backups and then try again."  Download the 'old' backup to your computer as a record, then delete the 'old' backup from the server. Repeat step "4.
    6. A backup zip file will be listed under that course. Select it and click the "Download Backup" option in the right column to download to your computer. The zip file is a Linux file. It will appear as a "corrupted file" if you intend to open it with a PC or Macintosh program. Do not worry about this error message.

Restore the backup

    1. Login to WebCT.
    2. Select the Course Functions tab in your myWebCT page.
    3. Select the course shell where you want to restore with the copy you backed up as above.

Note: The content of the backup will overwrite the content of the destination course shell.

    4. Click the "Upload Backup" option in the right column.
    5. Select the backup zip file from your computer and click ‘Upload’.
    6. A backup zip file will be listed under that course. Select it and then click the “Restore Backup" option
    7. Select "Keep Users" in the subsequent screen if the destination course shell is a shell for the current semester which is pre-loaded with the students who register into the course.
