The Women of Color Network of faculty and staff would like to welcome you to the University of Rhode Island!
The Women of Color Network is a community of faculty and staff at URI who come together once a month to bond and build new opportunities for collaboration. The need for this network became evident when in November 2008 a group of women comprised of faculty, staff, and graduate students came together to discuss issues of women of color in higher education. Various women were struck by the fact that many had not met each other despite numerous years at URI. Having an opportunity to meet more women of color was expressed as a need that would help to build a sense of belonging and community on campus. Since then, we have continued to meet on a monthly basis. The gatherings are informal and discussion topics arise organically based on the needs of the women, current events, as well as personal and professional goals.
In addition to monthly gatherings, we share resources and stay connected via a low volume listserv. Common postings include invitations for impromptu lunches and notification about important events on and off campus that may be of interest to faculty and staff in higher education.
If you have not yet received information about our future meetings, please contact Jasmine Mena (firstname.lastname@example.org) at the Department of Psychology or Carolyn Sovet (email@example.com) at the Women’s Center for information. You may also visit our website www.uri.edu/woc/ for information and useful resources. Also, let us know if you would like to be added to the WOCNETWORK@listserv.uri.edu.
Welcome and we hope to see you in the very near future.
