KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 Sept. 2, 2026 \u2013 The University of Rhode Island Psychological Consultation Center<\/a> and the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic<\/a> have moved\u2014together\u2014to a new location on the main floor of URI\u2019s Social Science Research Center at 130 Flagg Road.<\/p>\n\n\n

The center and the clinic are used for clinical training for students in the\u00a0College of Health Sciences<\/a>\u2019\u00a0mental and behavioral health counseling master\u2019s degree<\/a>\u00a0program, the\u00a0Ph.D. clinical psychology program<\/a>, and the\u00a0couple and family therapy master\u2019s degree<\/a>\u00a0program.\u00a0The URI campus community and the local community may take advantage of these counseling services.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new and improved, more modern space has 13 therapy rooms, each with a window. Treatment spaces are equipped with audio and video equipment for live observation or recording for supervisors and clinicians to review. The facility includes increased space for clinic staff, supervisors, and students to meet. The building also has rooms for clinical research.<\/p>\n\n\n

In addition, the new location has reserved parking spaces on Flagg Road to increase access to the clinic for the greater South County community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur program trains in evidence-based counseling methods and approaches,\u201d said Mark Robbins, professor of psychology and coordinator of the mental and behavioral health counseling master\u2019s degree program. \u201cMost master’s programs do not have in-house clinics, so this space and the opportunities it provides for training are not the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

With multiple programs sharing the same space, there will be more opportunities to collaborate on clinical trainings and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a longstanding history of collaboration with the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic,\u201d said Lindsey Anderson, director of URI\u2019s Psychological Consultation Center. \u201cWith our clinics sharing the same space, more opportunities for collaboration will certainly emerge\u2014especially as our procedures become interwoven.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson has collaborated on many projects and outreach activities over the years with Gina MacLure, coordinator of the URI Couple and Family Therapy Clinic in the Department of Human Development and Family Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe new space will provide our students with significantly improved facilities, greater accessibility, and expanded opportunities for collaboration with the master\u2019s program in psychology,\u201d said MacLure. \u201cWe are especially excited about the opportunity to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across the College of Health Sciences and to become an integral part of this vibrant space on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With twice as much space, URI students will have access to more training opportunities with clients, while receiving valuable feedback from faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving clients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever possible, clinic supervisors match a client\u2019s needs with a clinician who has experience working with a particular issue or specific population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do our best to match clients with clinicians based on their expressed interests and needs,\u201d said Anderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While insurance isn\u2019t accepted for counseling services, the fees are intended to reflect how much an insurance co-pay would be for each service. Therapy sessions, clinical intake, the child anxiety program, and assessment services can range from $20-$595. The staff identifies a fee and\/or a treatment schedule that feels manageable and sustainable for the client and financial decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
