{"id":110942,"date":"2026-09-24T16:17:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T16:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=110942"},"modified":"2026-09-24T16:17:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T16:17:45","slug":"prepare-for-this-weekends-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2026\/09\/prepare-for-this-weekends-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Prepare for this weekend&#8217;s storm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sept. 24, 2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear URI Students,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am writing to make sure you are aware of a significant coastal storm\u2014a potential nor\u2019easter\u2014that is expected to begin impacting Rhode Island on Friday and continue through the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the exact track and impacts of the storm may continue to evolve, current forecasts indicate this could be a prolonged weather event, bringing periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and potentially hazardous conditions throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We encourage all students\u2014whether you live on campus or in the surrounding community\u2014to take some simple steps now to prepare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fully charge your phone, laptop, portable chargers, and other essential electronics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a vehicle, consider filling your gas tank before the storm arrives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have flashlights and fresh batteries available in case of a power outage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture and other items that could become hazardous in strong winds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you have essential medications, food, water, and other necessities you may need for the weekend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. Heavy rain, strong winds, downed trees or power lines, and coastal flooding may make some roads unsafe or inaccessible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay away from the shoreline, rocks, seawalls, and other coastal areas during periods of high surf and strong winds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most importantly, please look out for one another. Check in on your friends, roommates, and neighbors, particularly if we experience power outages or other disruptions. Whether you live on campus or in one of our surrounding communities, please be thoughtful neighbors and good members of the community throughout the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University will continue to closely monitor conditions throughout the weekend and will communicate any changes to University operations or other important safety information as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking a few minutes to prepare now can make a significant difference if conditions worsen over the weekend.
