{"id":58743,"date":"2014-03-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/annual-dana-shugar-colloquium-to-discuss-effect-of-media-on-latina-girls\/"},"modified":"2014-03-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T00:00:00","slug":"annual-dana-shugar-colloquium-to-discuss-effect-of-media-on-latina-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2014\/03\/annual-dana-shugar-colloquium-to-discuss-effect-of-media-on-latina-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Dana Shugar Colloquium to discuss effect of media on Latina girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\tMarch 17, 2014<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/sites\/16\/2021\/05\/Oviedo.jpg\" width=\"181\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\"\/>WHAT:\tThe University of Rhode Island&#8217;s Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies Dana Shugar Colloquium will consider the effects that some targeted media outlets may have on adolescent Latina girls. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nWHO: \t\tMarilda Oviedo of Kingston, a post-doctoral fellow in URI&#8217;s Harrington School of Communication and Media, will discuss &#8220;Leaving Latinas Behind: Latina Media and Feminist Ideologies.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nWHEN: \tTuesday, March 18 at 12:30 p.m. at the Memorial Union, Atrium 2, 50 Lower College Road, Kingston<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nA Multicultural Faculty Fellow at URI, Oviedo&#8217;s research focuses on cultural identity, media representations of ethnicity\/race and gender, and participatory media. This lecture will expand on her research that examines the dominant ideologies found in two online magazines hosted by an organization that advocates for media education of Latina adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHer findings have shown that feminist ideologies far outnumber some of the traditional ideologies likely to be advocated by mainstream, commercial media. However, for an organization aimed at media education of Latinas, talk of ethnicity and race was limited. Oviedo received her doctorate in mass communications from the University of Iowa, and her master\u2019s degree from Texas Tech University.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe Dana Shugar Colloquium lecture is named in honor of the late Dana Shugar, who began teaching English and women\u2019s studies at URI in 1991 and was a multiple nominee for the Teaching Excellence Award.
