\n\t\tGolf event raises $25,000 for Amaral Scholarship Foundation<\/i><\/p>\n


\nKINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 August 31, 2011 \u2013 Harry Amaral spent his time at the University of Rhode Island helping students in need find a way to fund their education. To ensure that his legacy lives on, Amaral\u2019s friends and family gathered earlier this summer for the first Harry Amaral Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.<\/p>\n


\nAmaral spent 36 years at URI \u2013 first as a financial aid official and then as director of Enrollment Services \u2013 before his death Oct. 17, 2010. More than 100 golfers participated in his honor at Valley Country Club in Warwick, raising more than $25,000 for the Amaral Scholarship Foundation. Amaral started the foundation specifically for students in programs at the state\u2019s Department of Children Youth and Families in need of financial support to remain at the University.<\/p>\n


\n\u201cThis was an opportunity to celebrate Harry\u2019s life while also honoring the dedication he had to the students at the University,\u201d said URI Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Dougan. \u201cWe were able to raise money that will go to students in need of financial aid, which is what Harry spent so much of his time doing at URI.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nRemembered as a \u201cgo-to-guy\u201d when it came to solving students\u2019 financial problems, Amaral was known to the University community as someone who always put the student’s needs and interests first. <\/p>\n

In honor of the many young students Amaral helped during his years at URI, Billy Maaia \u2013 a lifelong friend of Amaral’s \u2013 entered a foursome in the golf tournament consisting of young golfer ages 18 to 26. The quartet \u2013 referred to as \u201cHarry’s Hitters\u201d \u2013 won the tournament.<\/p>\n


\n\u201cThese kids symbolized the kind of students Harry assisted during his career,\u201d Maaia said. \u201cThey played in tribute to him and his dedication to students. It was only fitting that this group won the tourney with the best total score.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nMaaia and Dougan were members of the committee that organized the event. Other committee members were Charlie Schifino (director, URI University Computing Systems); Brother Francis; committee chair Jeff Chase, Tony Leone, former URI golf coach Tom Drennan and current URI golf coach and Deputy Director of Athletics Gregg Burke. <\/p>\n


\n\u201cIt was great fun to see these golfers and Harry’s old friends play the course in his honor,\u201d Maaia said. \u201cI am certain Harry was looking down on us all and smiling.\u201d<\/p>\n


\nAmaral, a long time resident of Narragansett, was married to Peggy Amaral and they have three children: Nina, Meagan and Nicholas. The three children are URI graduates and were on hand for the golf tournament.<\/p>\n
