{"id":68427,"date":"2005-02-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-02-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news-draft\/uncategorized\/odaiko-new-england-to-perform-at-uri-feb-18\/"},"modified":"2005-02-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-02-10T00:00:00","slug":"odaiko-new-england-to-perform-at-uri-feb-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2005\/02\/odaiko-new-england-to-perform-at-uri-feb-18\/","title":{"rendered":"Odaiko New England to perform at URI Feb. 18"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"press-release-import\">\n\t\tJapanese drumming promises to mesmerize!<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nKINGSTON, R.I. &#8212; February 10, 2005 &#8212; Odaiko New England, one of the premiere Japanese Taiko Drumming troupes on the East Coast, will perform at the University of Rhode Island on Friday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. Doors to URI\u2019s Edwards Auditorium, Upper College Road, Kingston will open at 7:30 p.m. While the concert is free and open to the public, a voluntary $5 donation will be gladly accepted. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tOdaiko New England performances are filled with high-energy and very visual! Taiko refers to both the modern art of taiko drumming and to the drums themselves. While modern taiko drumming is rapidly gaining appreciative audiences and fans, taiko has a long history in the Japanese classical arts, spanning close to 2,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThis is a repeat performance at URI. Odaiko performed at the University in 2001. In addition to its nighttime appearance at URI, the troupe will give a presentation to students in URI\u2019s Music Department and a second presentation to students in John O\u2019Malley\u2019s social studies class at South Kingstown High School on the day of the performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tOdaiko\u2019s appearance is part of an on-going Pangaea: URI Roots Music Series, a production of URI\u2019s Department of Housing and Residential Life.
