This institute, by the way, is the oldest, continuous taxation institute in the country and the only one of its kind in Rhode Island.

The Institute provides these professionals — lawyers, accountants, and insurance executives — a chance to familiarize themselves with the latest tax forms, updates, modifications, or tweaked tax laws.

An executive committee works with URI’s Special Programs Office, located at URI’s Providence Campus, to fine tune topics that will be offered each year. Another URI connection is Joseph P. Matoney, professor of accounting at URI, who generally participates in one of the breakout sessions. This year, his session will review and update home office, computer, and automobile deductions for individuals.

For those who attend the daylong institute, URI, again under the auspices of the Special Programs Office, will provide continuing education credits that meet the requirements of the participants’ professional groups.

This year’s Institute, which generally attracts 150 to 200 professionals from across the state, will be held Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Providence.

Virginia Nardone, director of the Special Programs Office, said: “Our long track record in hosting this program shows our commitment to professional development in this field.
