Zoey Stites earned her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Rhode Island and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Florida. She taught photography and design at Florida Southern College before returning to Rhode Island in 2001. In addition to her courses at URI, she teaches at the Community College of Rhode Island and Salve Regina University and works as a freelance preparator.
She works in both digital and wet darkroom media and has an obsession with words. She is perpetually exploring the transformative possibilities of images, text and space. Her work, in individual images and in series, deals with the idea of words as a form of expression. Currently this interest has become more focused on the actual words themselves, the use of words, culturally and by the media, the impact that they can have and the power of personal, cultural and ascribed meanings.
