Basic Course Program in Communication at URI
BIO
Dr. Roth joined the Department of Communication Studies at URI in 2007. He teaches undergraduate courses in rhetoric and communication theory, and graduate seminars on the history of rhetoric and medicine. His teaching has earned him several prestigious honors, including the Douglas Ehninger Award for Teaching Excellence and The University of Iowa Outstanding Teaching Award.
Dr. Roth's passion for teaching is motivated, in large part, by his active research agenda. His work emphasizes and theorizes the reciprocal influences linking together rhetoric and medicine, from ancient Greece to the present, and his writings on this subject are published as book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Roth often presents his research at national and international conferences that are devoted to the study of rhetoric, communication, education, and philosophy.
In addition to teaching, researching, and writing, Dr. Roth is the Director of the Basic Course Program in communication at URI. His responsibilities in this position include developing and managing the curriculum for, and overseeing the delivery of, 160 sections of Communication Fundamentals (COM100/100H/110) every year. Because the course serves as both the introductory course for the Communication Studies major and as a General Education Program requirement, it enrolls nearly 3600 students each year.
Ian Reyes, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of
Communication Studies, was instrumental in establishing a new
recording studio in the Memorial Union, that focuses on community based productions. More >>
