Dr. Roth began his academic career at the age of 26 as a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the Department of Communication Studies at URI in 2007 where he now teaches undergraduate courses in rhetorical and communication theory, and graduate seminars on the history of rhetoric and medicine. His teaching has earned him several prestigious honors, including the Douglas Ehninger Award for Teaching Excellence and The University of Iowa Outstanding Teaching Award.
Dr. Roth's passion for teaching is motivated, in part, by his active, research agenda. He specializes in the reciprocal influences between rhetoric and medicine, dating back to ancient Greek times, and his work is published in books and in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Roth often presents his work at numerous, national and international conferences that are devoted to the study of Rhetoric, Communication, Education, and Philosophy.
In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Roth is the Director of the University’s Basic Course Program in communication. His responsibilities in this position include developing and managing the curriculum for and overseeing the delivery of more than 150 sections of COM100/100H/110: Communication Fundamentals. Because the course serves as both the introductory course for the Communication Studies major and as a General Education Program requirement, it enrolls more than 3600 students each year.
