COURSE DESCRIPTION: Planning, evaluation, and programming in public libraries, with an emphasis on community analysis and responsive services. Development of a grant proposal or equivalent project required.

GOAL: To familiarize students with the concepts, philosophy and ethics of public library service and management, and with the role of the public library in society.

OBJECTIVES:

bulletTo survey the range of services and resources that public libraries provide to meet the educational, recreational, developmental and informational needs of users (GSLIS Educational Outcome 1)
bulletTo discuss the core values and professional ethics of public librarianship, with special attention to intellectual freedom and equity of access (2, 3, 14)
bulletTo read and evaluate published research on public library issues and operations (13)
bulletTo identify and evaluate the information needs of a community, and propose information resources and/or services to meet them (10, 11)
bulletTo practice and hone communication skills, through class discussions, reviews of published research and commentary, presentations in person or online, and the preparation and critiquing of grant proposals (8)
bulletTo explore and reflect on the role of the public library in an evolving information environment (18, 19, 20)
