The URI Marine Biology Program was established in 1996, and 80-100 freshmen enter the program each year. Most of our students are from out-of-state and come to us from all around the US (see freshman class profiles). The curriculum for the BS in Marine Biology is designed for students who plan on pursuing marine biology at a professional level or who wish to use their training and expertise in a wide range of careers. The program allows students to explore the vast world of marine biology while also providing a important foundation in modern biological sciences, chemistry, math, physics and oceanography. We encourage an interdisciplinary approach that includes study in other marine-related areas, such as Aquaculture and Fisheries, Marine Affairs, Marine Environmental Economics, and Marine Archaeology, History and Literature, and/or involvement in URI's Honors Program. Students may choose to complete a minor or double major in one of these areas (or others), depending on their interests. Other students with an interest in Marine Biology may completed a BA in Biology (with appropriate marine-related courses, or a Minor in Marine Biology).
Advising, Mentoring and Instruction - Marine Biology majors are advised by marine biology faculty and student peer mentors. Marine biology teaching labs are located in the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences (CBLS), with state-of-the-art lecture, classroom, and laboratory facilities on the Kingston Campus. Marine biologists in the Department of Biological Sciences and other departments in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences and in the Graduate School of Oceanography teach courses for our students. Semester-long study abroad opportunities for marine biology majors, including those at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and the Woods Hole SEA Semester program (SEA Education Association), broaden students' experience in marine biology in the lab, in the field, and at sea.
Experiential Learning - Our students become involved in a wide range of meaningful academic year and summer job experiences (e.g., internships) that will prepare them for the next step in their education and careers. Students are encouraged to participate in research (volunteer, paid or for academic credit) or participate in off-campus internships in research or outreach. Students maywork in faculty research labs staring. as early as freshman year. Labs are located on the Kingston campus or at the Graduate School of Oceanography on the Narragansett Bay Campus, just 6 miles away. Students may also do field work (locally or in tropical locales) and may have the opportunity to participate in research cruises led by URI marine scientists.
Awards and Honors - Our students have received many prestigious awards for their academic achievements and research accomplishments. We are quite proud of the growing number of high achieiving students in marine biology and related fields who have recently been awarded nationally competitive NOAA Hollings Scholarships (7 students in the past 3 years), Goldwater Scholarships, and Udall Scholarships.
Alumni Achievements - The alumni of the Marine Biology Program have been very successful, continuing their education in graduate school, and working as professionals in all areas of marine and environmental science, K-12 science teaching, college and university teaching, and research, research, administration and/or outreach in local, state and federal government agencies, and in private industry.
