September 10, 2001

October 15, 2001

November 5, 2001

December 10, 2001

February 25, 2002

March 25, 2002

April 8, 2002 (planned)

May 6, 2002 (planned)

Significant Activities:

The improvements implemented to the Research Office web site were discussed. Further suggestions made by Council members included improving search capabilities (especially for the proposals submitted and awards received data), pdf versions of reports, and availability of the electronic resource announcements SMARTS and RESRCH-L.

The topics of graduate student support, stipends, and tuition were subject to multiple discussions. The Council endorsed the proposal brought forth from the Graduate Council to lower tuition for students supported on research grants. Since the President rejected this proposal, undoubtedly this will continue to be a topic of interest for the Council in the future.

The Council endorsed legislation supporting the recomrnendations of the Partnership Review Committee. Subsequent discussion with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee led to the return of the legislation to the Council, so the Partnership review will be part of future meetings.

A subcommittee (R. Brown, B. Heikes, K. Markin, and H. Zia) was formed to review applicants to the NSF Major Research Instrumentation program. The NSF allows only three proposals to be submitted from each University and the subcommittee made recommendations to meet this requirement.

Finally, the Council reviewed faculty proposals submitted to the Faculty Development and Proposal Development programs. Nineteen proposals were reviewed in the Faculty Development category, requesting $126,171. Seven of these proposals were recommended for funding, totaling $34,605. In the Proposal Development category, twenty-three proposals were reviewed, requesting $181,319. Eight of these proposals were recommended for funding, totaling $51,187. In addition, one other proposal was recommended for funding using other sources of money.
