Faculty Senate Executive Committee Meeting

Minutes #9

September 13, 2013

1. The meeting was called to order at 9:10AM on September 13, 2013 in the Dorothy Vocino Conference Room in the URI Library, Chairperson Byrd presiding. Senators Brady, Cerbo, Davis, and Nassersharif were present. Senator Rice was absent.

2. No minutes were available.

3. ANNOUNCEMENTS/CORRESPONDENCE/REPORTS

a. The FSEC reflected on the proceedings of the Sept. 19th Senate Meeting. It was considered by all to have been successful. The President's address and the live-stream of his speech were well received.

4. ONGOING BUSINESS

a. The FSEC discussed the administrator evaluation process. Instruments and procedures at other institutions were reviewed. It was found that some institutions make public the results of annual reviews and periodic evaluation reports. Some reports are extensive, including statistical analyses of survey data and comments by individual participants. It was found to be common at other institutions for the senate executive committee to be involved in evaluating administrators.

The FSEC expressed concern that it cannot evaluate its own process without being in receipt of some sort of report or summary. The process includes feedback to college evaluation committees and their respective faculty constituencies after their participation. The FSEC is outside of that feedback. Discussion ensued regarding differing feedback vehicles.

The survey questions used in the 2012-13 evaluations were reviewed.

The committee moved approval of the following:

During the second year of the Administration Evaluation pilot process (2013-14), the Administrator Evaluation Coordinator will review the evaluation process, survey data, and reports and report on his findings to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee if requested. Issues of confidentiality will be respected.

The motion was approved 4 yeas, 1 abstention (1 member absent).

b. The FSEC discussed the revised Gen Ed program. UCGE Chairperson Maier-Speredelozzi will be coming to the Sept. 27 FSEC meeting. The committee remains concerned about implementation and will ask if there are other institutions that are engaged in the structure that is proposed for URI.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Neff
