Guidelines for the Format of Theses and Dissertations

The following guidelines are provided to clarify the standards set by the Graduate School at the University of Rhode Island and to describe the criteria used to approve a thesis or dissertation. Following the defense in the discipline under which the work is awarded, it must meet the standards described below.

DO NOT consult another thesis or dissertation for guidance. It may be incorrect. Candidates are responsible for consulting with the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School regarding University requirements on preparation of the thesis or dissertation and on deadlines for submission.

A Format check should be conducted at least once before th final copies are handed in. For practical purposes, the format check is done using a PAPER COPY of the thesis or dissertation. Please DO NOT bring a laptop for a format check.

Students should be advised that they are responsible for binding of any additional copies that they desire. The Graduate School cannot arrange for the binding of additional copies.
