Office of International Education

The Office of International Education and National Student Exchange offers students the opportunity to study in more than 200 affiliated study abroad programs in over 40 different countries, including domestic exchange opportunities with other universities in the USA and its territories (National Student Exchange/NSE).

Our services are many, including: application and pre-departure planning, student advising, as well as guiding the development of new international student initiatives introduced by members of the faculty and respective colleges.

We administer and coordinate activities in the following categories:

Institutional Student Collaborations and Mobility:

  • International MOU's and Student Exchange Agreements (undegraduate and graduate, visiting and degree students)
  • Exchange and Visiting Student Exchange Programs
  • Winter and Summer Faculty-Led International Programs
  • URI Sponsored International Internships

Building Capacity Projects

  • English Languange Studies Program
  • International Teaching Assistants English Language Certification
  • English Immersion Summer Program
  • Cross-Cultural and International Capacity Training Programs

International Clearinghouse Projects

  • Track and facilitate international scholarships that support international and global student mobility
  • Participate in the implementation of the Global Education Advisory Committee
  • Track empirical data that examines the correlation between the study away experience and degree completion
  • Manage hybrid international/national education programs where URI grants credit for academic activities at non-URI locations

 

Overarching Goals

  • To nurture students’ participation in global education through study abroad, credit bearing international and national internships and the National Student Exchange/NSE
  • To promote the development of cross-disciplinary international student programs (semester and summer programs and/or affiliations) in underrepresented geographical areas by Degree Granting Colleges (DGCs)
  • To assist the Provost Office and the URI Office of Safety and Risk Management with the development and dissemination of international crisis management plans along with the Office of Legal Counsel and DGC’s 
  • To conduct orientation services for international students, (immigration and cross-cultural issues) visitors, and sponsors 
  • To assist in the recruitment of international students 
  • To guide and supervise the URI Immersion Global Skills Institute and help steer international internships in the fields of Business, Engineering, Fashion Merchandising and Design, Fisheries, Marine Biology, Natural Resource Economics, and Pharmacy
