International Mission

Today’s shared global environment delineates the performance of the next generation of specialists regardless of their academic preparation, government, or business orientation.  For this reason and many others, the International Center, in collaboration with the Provost Office, strives to contribute to provide a world class performance in higher education that translates into internationalization of undergraduate curricula, globalization of operations through institutional linkages, and generating global skill building opportunities that increase students’ chances to take full advantage of broad-based benefits offered by the global environment.

 

Overarching Goals

  • Nurture students’ participation in global education through education abroad and credit bearing international internships (e.g., semester, summer and J-mester)
  • Partner with DGCs and Office of Experiential Learning and Community Engagement to develop standards for international internships
  • Partner with the Global Education Task Force to develop guidelines for URI Immersion Global Skills Programs and international Summer and J-mester Faculty Led Programs
  • Partner with Degree Granting Colleges and General Counsel in the formulation of MOU and MOA
  • Assist the URI Office of Safety and Risk Management and Legal Counsel with the articulation and dissemination of international crisis management plans for URI
  • Partner with the Graduate and Undergraduate Admission Offices in the formulation and delivery of admission and registration practices that conform to federal government standards
  • Serve as Responsible Officers charged with the maintenance and compliance of federal regulations related to SEVIS reporting requirements and SEVP school recertification records
  • Conduct orientation services, ongoing immigration and cross-cultural advising for international students international interns, research scholars, visiting international professors, and DGC sponsors
  • Guide the development of a comprehensive ESL and conditional admission process

 

Organizational Structure

Reporting to University College, through the joint contributions of the Office of International Education, the Office of International Students  & Scholars, the Office of Faculty Led Programs, and the English Language Study Program, the International Center coordinates and/or administers activities in the following areas:

Student Mobility Agreements and Collaborations:

  • International MOU's and Student Exchange Agreements (undegraduate and graduate, visiting and degree students)
  • Exchange and Visiting Student Exchange Programs
  • Winter and Summer Faculty-Led International Programs
  • URI Sponsored International Internships

International Clearinghouse Projects

  • Track and facilitate international scholarships that support international and global student mobility
  • Participate in the implementation of the Global Education Advisory Committee
  • Track empirical data that examines the correlation between the study away experience and degree completion
  • Manage hybrid international/national education programs where URI grants credit for academic activities at non-URI locations
