URI IN BELIZE
SUMMER 2009

Location

Belize is an English speaking country located on the northeast coast of Central America. Belize was an important center of the Ancient Maya Civilization, there are more may ruins in the country, than government buildings. Today the country is a cultural melting pot of Creole (Afro-Caribbean), Maya, Garifuna, East Indian, Mennonite, Chinese and European/North American influences.

 

Program Fees:
  • Program A: $2,400
  • Program B: $2,570

  • NOTE: All fees subject to change due to currency fluctuations/exchange rates
    • Tuition for 6 credits
    • Airport Pickup and drop off

    • Daily breakfast and dinner
    • Program related Field Trips

     

    AIRFARE IS NOT INCLUDED

     

    Academics:
    • 6 URI credits total; 3 credits for APG 310, "Problems in Anthropology " and 3 credits for APG 470, "Independent Study: Directed Study or Research". Students can choose from:
      1. Archeology of the Maya
        • Coursework involves daily lectures and discussions on the Maya from the Pre Classic to Modern Times
      2. Archaeological Field Experience
        • 2 weeks of Archaeological Excavation at site of Cahal Pech and 1 week of Classroom work.
        • Excavation M-F from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM under the direction of Dr. James Awe, Director of the Archeology Department of Belize
        • Daily field journal
    Housing
    • Cahal Pech Village Resort
    • Double Occupancy air conditioned rooms
    • Classes in the open air veranda at the resort

     

    Cultural Activities:
    • Tour of San Ignacio on Market Day
    • Tropical Rain forest and nature preserve visits
    • Visits to Mayan archaeological sites
    • Visits to local artisans and outlying Mayan towns
