Subject: Updates on State Policy on Licensing for
"foreign students"
Dear International Students and Scholars,
We would like to inform you of the recent updates on state
policy on issuance of driving license for international students.
Details are as follow:
"Holders of a B1 or B2 visitor's visa are not eligible
for a Rhode Island driver's license.
Foreign students must have the following documents to secure
a Rhode Island operator's license:
an updated passport containing an I-94
a valid social security card
an Immigration and Naturalization form I-20
written confirmation from the college verifying current enrollment
of the student
a student ID
documentation regarding Rhode Island address of student (letter
from college with student's address is acceptable)"
In view that new policy does not address the concern of F2,
J1 and J2 holders, our office is making efforts to get clarification
from the DMV regarding the driving status of F2,J1 and J2
holders. Our office, however, will write supporting letters
on behalf of students who are applying for driver's licenses.
Please be patient while we keep you updated.
