Nursing Education

The University of Rhode Island College of Nursing offers a Master of Science degree with a specialization in nursing education that will prepare nurses to practice as educators in a variety of settings. Graduates assume roles as educators in academia and as community/client educators in health care agencies and community and school-based programs, as well as in staff development in various health care agencies and human resources departments. Students' needs and career goals are considered in the selection of professional options in this concentration. Opportunity to diversify within the concentration is possible.


CURRICULUM

Nursing Education is a 41-credit specialty which includes 14 credits of nursing core courses (consisting of concepts and theories in nursing practice, research, leadership and role development), 15 credits specific to nursing education and 12 credits of electives. The program culminates with a written comprehensive examination and the submission of a substantial scholarly work involving significant independent study which is referred to as the major paper. This requirement is an extension of work completed from prior coursework in the master's program.

NUR 500 Theoretical Study of the Phenomena in Nursing (4 credits)
NUR 505 Nursing Research (3 credits)
NUR 507 Theories of Practice for Nursing (3 credits)
NUR 510 Advanced Leadership in the Health Policy Process (3 credits)
NUR 520 Graduate Study Seminar (1 credit)


REQUIRED COURSES FOR NURSING EDUCATION (15 credits)

NUR 538 Learning Theories and Educational Strategies for Health Professionals (3 credits) The study of selected learning theories and strategies; their application in health professions. Emphasis will be on expanding the scope of teaching as professionals.
NUR 539 Application of Learning Theories in Professional Practice (3 credits) Field project in the application of learning theories and strategies in professional practice. Emphasis will be on gaining knowledge of application of strategies and outcome evaluation in practice and educational settings.
NUR 541 Advanced Study of Teaching in Nursing Education and Practice (3 credits) Advanced study of educational theories and strategies having application in nursing education and practice. Emphasis will be on role development, instructional design, methods and evaluation.
NUR 542 Practicum in Nursing Education (6 credits) A field experience designed to develop competence in teaching. Emphasis is placed on the instructional design component and the utilization of strategies based on theoretical knowledge.

ELECTIVES

Selection should be based on prior knowledge, clinical experience, and career goals. Courses should have an education focus and/or clinical area of interest. Other College of Nursing concentration courses are also acceptable.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Admission to the Graduate School.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Two letters of recommendation (academic and professional).
  • Curriculum vita.
  • Completion of MAT or GRE with a satisfactory score.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing or the National League for Nursing with an upper-division major in nursing.
  • Eligibility for R.N. licensure in Rhode Island.
  • Undergraduate statistics course prior to NUR 505.
  • Registered nurses with non-nursing baccalaureate degrees will be evaluated on an individual basis. Completion or challenge of upper-division nursing courses is required prior to acceptance into the master's program.
