Thanatology (Loss, Death, and Grief)

Educational programs in thanatology at the University of Rhode Island are multifaceted. Care of the dying and bereaved is integrated throughout the baccalaureate and masters program in nursing. Students in nursing and other disciplines who are interested in a basic understanding of death, dying, and grief may take a series of courses that qualify them for an interdisciplinary minor in thanatology. An interdisciplinary post-baccalaureate certificate program is available for those who wish to prepare for a career in thanatology, enhance their knowledge and skills in caring for the dying and their loved ones, and or prepare for national certification in thanatology. Graduate students are encouraged to conduct research studies in thanatology.
