Academic Skills Center
The Academic Skills Center, located in Room 239, offers a variety of services to students who wish to develop and sharpen their learning skills and improve their performance. Students should stop by the Center for further information and assistance or call 401-277-5221. All services provided by the Center are free and available in the following areas:
Students can receive individual or group help with their writing assignments at all stages of the writing process. Assistance is also available in the areas of reading comprehension, critical thinking and reading, and improving study skills. Workshops are geared to specific writing-related topics and study skills are offered throughout the semester. Computer-assisted writing is also available. Hours are posted each semester, and students can just walk in or make an appointment by calling 277-5221.
Assistance with all levels of mathematics is available on a walk-in basis. Hours are posted each semester.
Foreign Languages and Other Subjects:
Students who would like tutoring in a foreign language or other subjects should come to the Center or call 401-277-5221 for assistance.
Students who still fear high-tech and would like computer tutoring should come to the Center or call 401-277-5221 for assistance.
Students who have a learning disability or students for whom English is a second language can receive specialized tutoring by coming to the Center or calling 401-277-5221. The Center also has a computer with interactive software for students who are visually impaired.
Services for persons with physical challenges and learning differences:
The URI Feinstein Providence Campus offers services to students and program participants who are physically challenged or who have learning differences. Reasonable accommodations will be made for participants in college activities when requested 72 hours in advance of the scheduled program. These services are available by calling the Academic Skills Center at 401-277-5221. The URI Providence Campus in the Shepard Building is fully accessible to students who use wheelchairs.
