Sustainability
Minor:
A new minor in Sustainability is being created at
the University of Rhode Island. Our goal is to create a minor that
will engage students in the most compelling issue of the 21st century
and ultimately ensure that students leave this university with a commitment
to sustainable practices as private citizens and professionals.

Learning Projects
Emphasize Sustainability:
All
freshmen in the College of the Environment and Life Science
participate in a community service learning project directly related
to sustainability
and
their prospective majors. For example, aquaculture students
seeded scallops in nearby salt ponds to ameliorate the effects of the
North
Cape oil
spill. Geology students calculated the velocity and tested
the water quality of nearby
streams in a threatened watershed. Landscape Architecture students
helped improve a brook and pond on campus, creating a community
gathering place.
Another group
is initiating a community bike program on campus.
