Harsh Singh Lohit, M.B.A. ’87

Harsh Singh Lohit has always asked the big questions. Seeking the answers is what called him to leave his native India “as a restless 25-year-old” for the University of Rhode Island, where he earned his M.B.A. It drew him back to India where he built a distinguished career as a leader in the global software services industry for more than two decades, then called him to become a full-time farmer just five miles from where his ancestors farmed for over 1,000 years.

The big questions are also evident in Lohit’s photography, a longtime avocation in which he explores the boundaries and intersections of the world’s religions. His question is always: “With or without the labels, what is our common humanity?”

For more than two decades, Lohit built and managed successful companies including Headstrong, which provided specialized domain software solutions for the global capital markets. When Headstrong was acquired by Genpact in 2011, he remained as managing director until 2012.

“This brought me to a welcome crossroads,” he says. “I now had the luxury to choose to continue to be an entrepreneur or explore the world outside working for money. I chose to slow life down and shift to another world, to pursue my passion for history, travel, and photography, and I returned to till the land.”

Lohit can be found every day in a place called Aman Bagh, a traditional and artisanal farm. “We retain the ancient way of the North Indian peasant where we are one with the rhythm of nature in a closely knit community,” Lohit says of Aman Bagh, which means “Orchard of Peace.”
