Geoffrey Cameron made some big plays for Rhody men’s soccer back in 2006 and 2007. Today, he’s in his fifth season with Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo, where he was an MLS Rookie of the Year finalist, and has been voted to the MLS all-star team twice. In 2012 he helped lead the U.S. Men’s National Team to its first win over a South American team since 2007.

But Geoff’s got some big ideas off the field too. While he was sidelined with a knee injury in 2010, the support of his family inspired him to create the “20 for 20” campaign. The name represents his No. 20 Dynamo jersey and his goal to raise $20,000 for the Ronald McDonald House and Fisher House. Ronald McDonald House provides housing and financial support to families of hospitalized children, while the Fisher house does the same for families of wounded military veterans. His efforts earned him the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Month award back in October 2011, and now Geoff’s launched the 2012 20 for 20 campaign to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Considering that community outreach is a big focus at URI, we’re not surprised by Geoff’s humanitarian work, but we sure are proud.
