Welcome, from Winifred Brownell, Dean of Arts & Sciences

Welcome to the home page for the  College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Rhode Island (URI).  We are the largest and most complex college at URI, and, as a student-centered enterprise, we combine the advantages of a vibrant liberal arts institution with those of a mid-sized research university.  We enroll over 4,400 students as majors and offer 43 bachelor's, 6 master's, 2 professional master's, and 7 doctoral degree programs.  Moreover, we provide general education offerings to all undergraduates at URI.   Our programs of study enable students to understand our intellectual and cultural heritage and those of others in the global community, the physical and biological world in which we live, the rapidly changing roles and capabilities of electronic communications and computing technologies, and our social, economic, and political development.  The College engages in extensive service to the public and private sectors and conducts internationally renowned and externally funded programs of research.  We present over 125 performances for the public featuring Theatre and Music and offer several exhibitions in our Fine Arts Galleries throughout each academic year.

In addition to our 22 departments which you can reach via links from our home page, we house the Center for the Humanities, the Cancer Prevention Research Consortium, the John Hazen White Sr. Center for Ethics and Public Service, the Psychological Consultation Center, and the R.I. Partnership for Research on Women and Gender.  Many of our faculty and students are engaged in collaborative research within the Liberal Arts Core and in affiliation with the URI focus areas:  Marine and Coastal Environments; Children, Families and Communities; Health; and Enterprise and Technology. We offer successful summer camps for youth in Music and in Computer Science, and we co-sponsor the acclaimed Great Performances Series and the Kingston Chamber Music Festival.
