LSC 533: Digital Resources for Children and Young Adults
Spring, 2004 (draft)
Course description: Investigate informational, educational, and
recreational resources, primarily on the Internet. Emphasis on selection,
evaluation, promotion, and the development of information literacy.
Objectives: Students will
- build awareness of the range of services and resources that can be
provided to children and young adults through use of the Internet (1)*;
- explore and discuss the application of professional ethics (especially the
American Library Association’s Code of Ethics and Library Bill of Rights)
to issues in youth access to information, including filters, internet use
policies, and commercialization (2, 3);
- develop skills in selecting, retrieving, evaluating, and promoting
Internet sites and other digital resources for children and teenagers (4, 5,
6), with special attention to the interests, development, learning styles
and educational needs of those served (10, 11);
- practice effective communication skills, through participation in and
facilitating of class discussion; an online seminar presentation; and a term
paper or other final project (7, 8); and
- explore strategies for adapting new resources and technologies to the
support of essential library missions (10, 14, 15).
