Army ROTC is a program which provides college students the skills and leadership training to become officers in the United States Active Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard.
The academic program which ROTC provides challenges students to develop the responsibility, self-confidence, and leadership ability necessary to be successful, not only in the military, but in the civilian sector as well. The program emphasizes academic excellence, physical training, written and oral communication, as well as ethics to develop all facets of an individual. Qualified cadets have the opportunity to attend U.S. Army Airborne, Air Assault, Northern Warfare, and Mountain Schools.
For its many benefits, Army ROTC requires only a few hours a week. It does not interfere with your required college curriculum or social life. In fact, you will find ROTC a great place to form lasting friendships.
Upon graduation from a 4-year college and successful completion of ROTC, cadets receive commissions as Second Lieutenants in one of the Army's specialized branches. If you would like to build a solid, well-rounded future, take a closer look at Army ROTC at the University of Rhode Island.
Freshman and Sophomores enroll in the Basic Course which meets one and two hours per week. Classroom and outdoor instruction cover topics such as land navigation, rifle marksmanship, first aid and rappelling as well as a variety of other subjects.
Juniors and Seniors enroll in the Advanced Course. These students study subjects such as advanced leadership and management, small unit tactics, and military ethics.
Taking an ROTC course does not mean you have joined the Army. No obligation to the army is incurred during the freshman and sophomore years for non-scholarship cadets. In fact, there are only two ways a student can become obligated to the Army through ROTC:
In either case the student is fully informed in writing of their rights and obligations as an ROTC contracted cadet prior to becoming obligated.
Commissioned Lieutenants serve on active or reserve duty after graduation.
Students enrolled at Roger Williams University, and Salve Regina University may enroll in Army ROTC at The University of Rhode Island. They are eligible to receive credit for ROTC at their school. Basic Course classes are taught at Roger Williams and Salve Regina University weekly.
