University Artist Series: Saxophonist
Jared Sims in Concert. 
URI saxophone instructor Jared Sims will present an evening of music for the saxophone; part classical with piano accompainment, part jazz with his combo.  Assisted by Jessie Lo, piano, Steve Langone, drum set, and Dave Zinno, string bass.  8:00 pm. Snow date Saturday, February 13 at 8:00 pm.

Concert Band:  Brian Cardany, director. The programreflects the diverse and eclectic nature of the contemporary wind band repertoire, from standard concert pieces to recently composed works. 8:00 pm.

Music Education Workshop: “Teaching and Conducting Choral Music.” Presented by Mark Conley. Coordinated by Audrey Cardany. The Collegiate Chapter of MENC and the Music Department sponsors a choral music teaching and conducting workshop for music education students and music teachers.  The workshop will be presented by URI's Director of choral Activities, Mark Conley. Mr. Conley will present teaching techniques in a choral setting, and work with individual conductors with support from the URI Concert Choir.  Music will be provided.  Participant fee for conducting coaching is $15, all other participants $5.  9:00 am-12 noon in Roon C100, Fine Arts Center.

URI Concert: Colonial Brass Quintet. This brass chamber group, part of the Boston area U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty, presents an hour-long concert followed by a master class. Area college and high school brass players are invited to attend. 5:30 pm concert in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 7:00 pm master class in Room C100. Open to the public. Free.

RI Percussive Arts Society Festival: Ronald Stabile, coordinator. Percussion ensembles from Rhode Island area schools play before a panel of judges. Co-sponsored by Rhode Island Percussive Arts Society and the Music Department. 1:00-5:00 pm. Free.

Symphony Orchestra: Ann Danis, director. This concertfeatures the winners of the student soloist competition; Ethan Cafferky '13, french horn and Allison Parramore '12, flute. The program includes the first movements of the Concerto for Horn by gordon Jacob and the Concerto for Flute in G Major by Karl Stamitz. 8:00 pm.

University Artistic Series: "Movies and Musicals." Rene de la Garza, baritone, assisted by Patrice Newman, piano, Diana McVey, soprano, and Georgette Hutchinson, mezzo-soprano. 12     Friday University Artist Series: "A 70th Birthday Celebration." Geoffrey Gibbs, composer. Help celebrate Professor Emeritus, Geoffrey Gibbs' many decades of creative achievements by witnessing the premieres of his Songs of Land and Sea for baritone voice, clarinet and viola, and his Preludes for Piano and Percussion. Professor Gibbs performs and is assisted by Stephen Grueb, clarinet, Ann Danis, viola and Ronald Stabile, percussion. 8:00 pm.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents "The French Connection." Gene Pollart, director. The Music Department's elite group of wind and percussion students present an afternoon of music written by French composers or inspired by French culture. Pieces include Scenes from the Louvre by Norman Dello Joio, Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud, Fanfare from La Peri by Paul Dukas and The French Suite, a new work by Aldo Forte. 3:00 pm.

18      Thursday Music Convocation: “A Tribute to John Dempsey.” Ronald Lee, coordinator. Students and faculty perform and honor Professor Dempsey on his retirement after 46 years of teaching music in higher education, 37 of them at URI. 12:30 pm. Free.

Fri-April 9, An evening of piano music in both solo and duet arrangements performed by students of Manabu Takasawa and Grace Urrico. 8:00 pm. Free.
Sat-April 10, Ensemble and solo performances. Faculty pianists Grace Urrico, Michelle Beaton, Jean Maxon Carpenter, Joseph Parillo, and Manabu Takasawa with special guest Dr. Audrey Kaiser from Community College of Rhode Island. 7:00 pm.
Sun-April 11, Young Pianists Competition for elementary through high school students. Pre-college pianists from Southern New England perform before a panel of judges. Awards given in various categories.1-5 pm. Free.

10      Saturday Rhode Island National Association of Teachers of Singing Song Festival: Margaret Frazier, coordinator. The RINATS Song Festival is an all day, adjudicated event for voice students of RINATS members in musical theater and classical song and aria categories. 9:00 am- 5:00 pm. Open to the public. Free.

17      Saturday Instrument Repair Workshop:  Brian Cardany, coordinator;  David Bailey, repair technician.  This two-hour workshop focuses on basic band instrument repair and maintenance.  It is geared toward current and future band directors and music educators.  David Bailey is an active repair technician in the southern New Hampshire, northeastern Massachusetts area with over 30 years experience (  Open to the public in Fine Arts C100.  Free.

Lively Experiment, Mark Conley, coordinator. 7:30 pm.URI Concert:  Lively Experiment.  Mark Conley, director.  “At Home with Lively Experiment”.  Join URI’s premiere vocal ensemble as it travels across time in the comfort of the Music Department’s own home.  Become a part of the experience as members of the group explore poetic style and musical substance.  A performance in the style of a “Schubertiade,” home-style entertainment for those who love music and words.  7:30 pm.

5-9 Fifth Annual URI Summer Jazz Intensive Jazz Camp. Week-long day camp for young jazz musicians in grades 9-12, although younger students with experience may apply. Jam-paked with combos, master classes, theory. jam sessions, improvisation classes and big band, students learn in an intensive non-competitive setting staffed by URI's award winning jazz faculty: Eric Hoffbauer, guitar, Joe Parillo, piano, Jared Sims, winds, Mark Berney, brasses, Steve Langone, drums, and Dave Zinno, bass.
