URI announces poster contest winners

KINGSTON, R.I. -- December 4, 2001 -- Students from nine different schools in Rhode Island were recently honored as winners of the University of Rhode Island’s environmental poster contest. The contest was held in conjunction with URI’s fall honors colloquium, "A Just and Sustainable Future: Overcoming Barriers to Action," and co-sponsored by The Providence Journal.

Students in grades K-12 were asked to make a poster that answered the question "What can I do to make sure kids and critters inherit a clean, safe world?" Nearly 500 entries were received from more than 20 schools and from almost every city and town in Rhode Island.
The top winners in each of four age categories received U.S. Savings Bonds at a ceremony on November 29, while honorable mention winners received bookstore gift certificates. All entrants received certificates of participation.

The winning students are:
Grade K-3
First Place: Dallas Medeiros, Fort Barton School, Tiverton
Second Place: Heather Breitenstein, Ranger School, Tiverton
Third Place: Amelia Berg, Edgewood Highland School, Cranston
Honorable Mention: Daniel DeLuzio, Rhodes School, Cranston
Honorable Mention: Alex Farias, Fort Barton School, Tiverton

Grade 4-6
First Place: Jodi Ricci, Lincoln Central School, Lincoln
Second Place: Marissa Bertorelli, Lincoln Central School, Lincoln
Third Place: Chelsea Fortarezzo, Edgewood Highland School, Cranston
Honorable Mention: Evan Supinski, R.C. LaPerche School, Smithfield
Honorable Mention: Gus DelFarno, Lincoln Central School, Lincoln

Grade 7-9
First Place: Danielle Turcotte, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket (a resident
of North Smithfield)
Second Place: Sarah Upham, Gaudet Middle School, Middletown
Third Place: Emily Durfee, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket (a resident of
Cumberland)
Honorable Mention: Stephen Straube, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket (a
resident of Pascoag)
Honorable Mention: Marina Zambrotta, Thompson Middle School, Newport

Grade 10-12
First Place: Alicia Pavoni, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket
Second Place: Eric Suffoletto, Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket (a resident
of Millville, Mass.)

Contest judges were Peter Lord, environmental reporter for The Providence Journal, Cathy Cressy, director of administration for The Nature Conservancy, and Peter August, director of the URI Coastal Institute and professor of natural resources science.
