New age and Latin music to sizzle at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. -- October 2, 2002 -- If you’re looking for captivating rhythms of South America and other lands, come to the Fine Arts Recital Hall at University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus on Oct. 12. The evening is part of the University Artist Series.

An evening of new age and Latin music begins at 8 p.m. Featured artists are Brian Sparks, soprano and alto saxophone, Joe Parillo, piano, and Daniel Salazar, classical guitar. Special guests include the Alturas Duo- Carlos Boltes from Chile, viola and charango, and Scott Hill, guitarist.

The concert will feature music from Sparks’ new CD, "Wind Voyages," along with the music of Erik Satie and some of Sparks’ own compositions.

The second half of the program will be dedicated to the hypnotic sounds of South American music performed with a quartet of soprano saxophone, viola/charango, and two guitars.

The saxophone and guitar duo of Salazar and Sparks will play Heitor Villa-Lobos and David Noon selections. Joined by Joe Parillo, the concert will end with a passionate and fiery version of "La Cumparsita."

For information call 874-2431. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $2 for students.
