Teachers Can Meet RI Certification Requirements
through Narragansett Bay Classroom Course
on Global Environmental Change Education

Narragansett, RI -- January 27, 2003 -- The Narragansett Bay Classroom at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography is offering a three-credit course designed specifically for educators that fulfills biology, general science, or elementary state certification requirements.


Global Environmental Change Education (OCG 591) includes nine classroom sessions and two Saturday field sessions. Scheduled at times convenient for teachers, the classroom sessions will run for nine consecutive Wednesdays beginning February 26 from 4 to 6:30 pm at the Coastal Institute Conference and Visitor Center on the URI Bay Campus in Narragansett. The 6-hour field sessions will be held on two Saturdays, May 3 from 11 am to 5 pm, and May 10 from 8 am to 2 pm.

Course topics include global warming, ozone loss, sea level rise, the health effects of environmental degradation, the Kyoto Protocol, world population, biodiversity, national legislation, and mitigation options. The instructors, Gail Scowcroft of the URI Office of Marine Programs and biological oceanographer Dr. Paul Hargraves, will also introduce teachers to the science issues related to human impact on environmental systems, as well as social, political, and economic systems that affect the environment. Projects include development of inquiry-based activities for use in the classroom.
