KINGSTON, R.I. -- September 27, 2005 -- The doors are wide open at The Ryan Center for a new fall and winter season of top entertainment and sporting events, from rapper Kanye West to Chicago to the Business to Business Statewide Expo 2005.

While continuing to be the home of URI basketball, The Ryan Center offers the University of Rhode Island, South County, and the state of Rhode Island an event lineup filled with exciting concerts and trade shows.

“We are excited to begin our fourth season at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena,” said Global Spectrum’s Terry Butler, general manager for both facilities. “Our schedule this fall is certainly a diverse one, with events ranging from urban to classical music as well as family entertainment.”

The concert season at The Ryan Center will kick off Oct. 18, when the URI Student Entertainment Committee presents an 8 p.m. show by the hot new alternative rock group My Chemical Romance (with special guests Alkaline Trio and Reggie and the Full Effect.)

On Oct. 26, rapper Kanye West will travel to Kingston and take The Ryan Center stage at 8 p.m. West, whose recent album “Late Registration” held at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart for the past two weeks, was a featured artist in the ReACT Now benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims earlier this month, which aired live on MTV, VH1, and CMT. West was also recently seen performing on ABC’s “NFL Opening Kick Off” special.

On the lighter side – Chicago, the legendary rock ‘n roll group with horns, will fill The Ryan Center with the best sounds of the late ‘60s, ‘70s and the ‘80s Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. Tickets to this event are on sale now. A dinner package is also available for this show (quantities are limited) and can be ordered by calling 788-3080.

On Friday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m., the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra returns for its third annual Boston Pops Holiday Concert. Conducted this year by Principal Pops Guest Conductor Bruce Hangen (and also featuring the Grammy Award-winning ensemble New York Voices) this event is a perennial crowd favorite. Tickets to this event will go on sale Oct. 10, and group discounts are available by calling 788-3080.

As the home of the URI men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Ryan Center is looking forward to an exciting season, including the Dec. 3 men’s home game with Providence College and Dec. 31 game against Boston College, as well as a URI women’s Thanksgiving tournament. Season tickets for both programs are now on sale. Call 874-RAMS to order season tickets.

This fall also brings two unique events to The Ryan Center for the first time. The weekend of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, it will host the WJZS Pilgrim Subaru Family Festival. Catering to every member of the family, the event will feature everything from a rock climbing wall and Pluggy the talking Fire Hydrant to family nutrition and health information.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5 the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce presents the Business to Business Statewide Expo 2005. The event will kick off at 2 p.m. with welcoming remarks by Gov. Donald Carcieri and Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty. URI Vice President of Administration Robert Weygand, who will discuss URI’s impact on the local economy, will give the keynote talk. The Expo will feature businesses and attendees from throughout the entire state. Global Spectrum’s Kara Russo, director of marketing for The Ryan Center and Expo Committee co-chair, states “The URI Ryan Center and Global Spectrum are very pleased to help bring this new yearly event to the community through our partnership with the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. The 2005 Business to Business Statewide Expo demonstrates the importance of the great work that both the Chamber and URI do for the state, by further helping to encourage business development and economic growth.”

Special events at the Expo will include business seminars, a “Taste of South County” food sampling exhibition, a “South County Style” fashion show, and a Business After Hours. WHJJ talk show host Arlene Violet will also broadcast live from
the event. Booths are still available – call 783-2801 to reserve a space. Members of any southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce receive a discount on their booth. Admission to this event is free with a business card.

The Boss Ice Arena will also see its fourth annual Yankee Holiday Classic Hockey Tournament Dec. 27 and 28, presented by Yankee Chevrolet of Wakefield. High school teams from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts will compete for the Division 1 and Division 3 tournament titles currently held by Bishop Hendricken and Narragansett High School, respectively.

The Boss Ice Arena, as home to both the URI men’s and women’s club hockey teams, is also looking at another exciting year of Rams hockey action! Coming off last year’s spectacular seasons, which saw the men ranked number 1 nationally for 6 months and the women nationally ranked number 4, this season is looking more exciting than ever! Featured games include the men vs. Penn State Nov. 4 and 5, and the women vs. Western Michigan Oct. 22 and 23. Call 874-2732 for ticket and schedule information.
