KINGSTON, R.I. -- June 13, 2007 -- In order to provide the University of Rhode Island with the best emergency response when met with extraordinary events, the University Police, in conjunction with South Kingstown Police, the State Police and the National Guard have scheduled a number of exercises to be carried out on the Kingston Campus:
(1) On Friday, June 15th, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the South Kingstown Police Department and the University Police will be conducting an exercise in the vicinity of Woodward Hall and at Ellery Hall. Approximately 10 South Kingstown officers will coordinate with University Police to run through a "shooting on campus" scenario. All efforts will be made to have as little impact on the campus as possible. This exercise is a bi-product of our dialog with South Kingstown Police as we have prepared our documentation in response to the President's Emergency Planning initiative.)
(2) On Tuesday, June 19th, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., the Rhode Island State Police and the National Guard will conduct a counter-terrorism exercise in the vicinity of Ellery Hall and the Keaney parking lot. (This is the third annual exercise of the State's Counter Terrorism team to be conducted on the Kingston Campus, arranged at their request.)
(3) A third exercise, which will be a follow-up exercise again with South Kingstown Police and is tentatively planned for June 29th.
Safety and Risk Management has coordinated in advance with the appropriate managers of the respective site locations. Again, all efforts will be made to have as little impact on Campus operations as possible.
