URI to host public hearing on Higher Education Opportunity Act

WHO: Officials with the U.S. Department of Education

WHAT: Public hearing on proposed changes to the Higher Education
Opportunity Act of 2008. The University of Rhode Island is one of
five colleges to host a hearing. Other hearings will be held at Texas
Christian University (Sept. 19), Pepperdine University (Oct. 2),
Johnson C. Smith University (Oct. 6) and Cuyahoga Community
College (Oct. 15). The U.S. Department of Education also will host a
hearing in Washington, D.C. (Oct. 8).

WHEN: Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE: URI Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education, Paff
Auditorium, 80 Washington St., Providence.

WHY: Interested parties may suggest issues to be considered for action by
the negotiating committees. Financial aid officers, registrars
, bursars and others on the business side of higher education are
encouraged to attend and express their ideas. The panel will bring
information back to Washington, D.C. Presenters may sign up for
five-minute slots to suggest ideas to the panel. Registration for the
time slots will begin at 8:30 a.m. the day of the hearing at an on-site
registration table. Written comments also will be accepted and can
be sent to heoa08@ed.gov by Oct. 8.
