KINGSTON, R.I. – March 13, 2009 – The University of Rhode Island will offer its second GreenShare Garden School Day, an all-day series of gardening workshops aimed at helping gardeners prepare for the spring growing season, on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The program will be held at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center in Providence.
“This event is like a six-week gardening course all crammed into one day to help gardeners keep their thumbs green and the environment healthy,” said Sejal Lanterman, who heads up the URI Master Composter & Recycler program and is coordinating the GreenShare Garden School. “Our first one was so successful last fall in Kingston that we wanted to offer one that would be convenient to gardeners in the northern half of the state.”
Participants can choose to attend workshops on such topics as worm composting, seed starting, landscape design, container gardening, summer bulbs, orchids, easy lawn care and vegetable gardening. Workshop leaders include URI staff, Master Gardeners, and other experts.
In addition, information will be available from exhibitors representing the New England Carnivorous Plant Society, Rhode Island Orchid Society, Rhode Island Begonia Society, Rhode Island Rose Society, Rhode Island Bonsai, Rhode Island Wild Plant Society, the URI Master Gardeners, and the URI Master Composter/Recyclers. Free soil testing will be offered to those who bring a soil sample in a plastic bag.
A breakfast reception is included in the cost of the program, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.
A registration fee of $30 will be charged to those planning to attend the full day of workshops, while half-day registration is $20. URI Master Gardeners and Master Composters receive a $5 discount.
