Author of Ocean State to speak at URI, Oct. 14
Jean McGarry’s visit part of URI’s READ/WRITE series
KINGSTON, R.I.—October 5, 2010--Jean McGarry, a native Rhode Islander, is the author of eight books of fiction, including Ocean State, a collection of stories, some set in Rhode Island will speak at the University of Rhode Island Thursday, Oct. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. McGarry will speak about and read from her work. Her talk, free and open to the public, will be held in Swan Hall, Hoffmann Room 154, 60 Upper College Road, Kingston campus. McGarry’s visit kicks off URI’s fall READ/WRITE Guest Writers & Scholars Series.
She has taught fiction in The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University since 1987, and was department chair for eight years.
Her fiction has received The Southern Review Prize for Short Fiction, the University of Michigan Fiction Prize, a Pushcart Prize and a National Endowment for the Arts grant.
In addition to her books, her short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The Yale Review, Boulevard, The Southwest Review, and other publications.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard and her master’s in writing from Johns Hopkins.
