Jazz on tap at URI, Feb. 5-6

KINGSTON, R.I. – January 19, 2011 –The first University Artist Series concert of the winter/spring semester at the University of Rhode Island will feature jazz by the Dave Zinno Trio on Sunday, Feb. 6, following hard on the heels of the RI Music Educators Association Jazz Festival at URI the day before.
Both events will take place in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston. The RIMEA jazz festival, a full day of junior high and high school jazz bands competing for performance awards before a jury at the university, runs from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, and is free and open to the public. The University Artist Series jazz concert is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6, and will offer a mixed program of jazz standards and original compositions by the trio members. Admission to the concert is $10 general admission, $5 students.
The Dave Zinno Trio features URI Jazz Studies faculty artists Dave Zinno, double bass, with Tim Ray, piano, and Steve Langone, drums. The members of the group have played collectively with Jimmy Cobb, Junior Cook, Oliver Lake, Bob Brookmeyer, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Lyle Lovett, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Douglas, Steve Grossman, Shawn Monteiro and many others. They have performed in venues ranging from Broadway and television to Carnegie Hall and numerous jazz festivals, as well as on a variety of recorded CDs. They have toured Europe, South America, North Africa, Asia, the U.S., and will tour together in Italy this winter.
The jazz concert is one of three University Artist Series concerts all scheduled at URI this month. The next concert, “Music for Fun” featuring Ann Danis, viola, with other faculty members and guest performers, is set for Feb. 12 (This event is Canceled!)
Concert seats are available on a first-come basis. The box office opens 45 minutes before the start of each concert. The URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall is handicap-accessible, and parking is available in the lot behind the building, off Bills Road.
