KINGSTON, R.I. -- June 13, 2012 -- The second annual Harry Amaral Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Valley Country Club, 251 New London Ave. in Warwick, in honor of the former University of Rhode Island Enrollment Services director.
The tournament is $150 per player and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, auctions and dinner. It begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and follows with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The committee seeks $100 donations to sponsor each hole. There are also three levels of sponsorship for the memorial scholarship: Platinum $1,000; Gold $500; and Silver $250. Signs will be displayed on the golf course recognizing the sponsors and recognition will be in the program.
URI Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Dougan, University Computing Systems Director Charlie Schifino, and Jeff Chase are co-chairs of the tournament. To register, or for more information, please contact Dougan at 401-874-2427 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Amaral had spent 36 years at URI, first as a financial aid official and then as director of Enrollment Services before his death in October 2010. Throughout his career, Amaral was focused on helping URI students in need find a way to fund their education. To ensure that his legacy lives on, Amaral’s friends and family held the first annual golf tournament last year to support a scholarship fund in his honor.
Last year, more than 100 golfers participated, raising more than $25,000 for the Amaral Scholarship Foundation. Amaral had started the foundation specifically for students in programs at the state’s Department of Children Youth and Families in need of financial support to remain at the University. All proceeds from the tournament to be held July 30 will support the scholarship foundation.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate Harry’s life while also honoring the dedication he had to the students at the University,” said URI Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Dougan. “We are able to raise money that will go to students in need of financial aid, which is what Harry spent so much of his time doing at URI.”
All those interested in making a donation can make checks payable to URI Foundation-Amaral Scholarship, 79 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881.
