Tambora

Tambora was the site of the largest volcanic eruption in history in 1815. Shown here, sulphuric gases rise from the crater of Mt. Tambora on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography Professor Haraldur Sigurdsson located the first remnants of a Tamboran village under 10 feet of ash and has unearthed the first clues about its culture. URI Professor of Oceanography Steven Carey is photographed by Dr. Sigurdsson above the crater.
