Mary McGunigal wants to be a doctor. And she’s well on her way. That’s because during her sophomore year, she was selected by the Mount Sinai Humanities and Medicine Early Acceptance Program in New York City. But first, when she receives her degree in Classical Studies during undergraduate ceremonies on May 20, she will deliver the student commencement speech.

The URI Honors Program helped Mary get into the Mount Sinai Program, which is designed to provide motivated undergraduates like Mary with the flexibility to explore their interests and to have the experience of a broad liberal arts education before medical school.

For Mary, that meant she could pursue her passion for classical studies at URI, explore archeological sites in Italy and Greece, intern with an HIV outreach program at Miriam Hospital, spend spring break in Alabama volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and much more.

Next year, when Mary is a med student in New York City, she’ll take all those URI experiences with her. And one day, she’ll be a better doctor because of them.
