Ethics scholar to speak at URI Nancy Sherman to deliver annual psychology address KINGSTON, R.I. — February 23, 2000 — Nancy Sherman, distinguished professor of philosophy at Georgetown University, will present this year’s Psychology Honor Society, Psi Chi, Invited Address on Monday, March 6 at 3:15 p.m. Her talk, entitled “Does the Ghost of Aristotle Haunt Freud’s House?” is free and open to the public, and will be held in the Multicultural Center on URI’s Kingston Campus. A reception will immediately follow the talk. Sherman, of Washington D.C., is a renowned scholar on classical philosophies of ethics and the relationship of the development of virtues to the emotions. In addition to her current teaching position at Georgetown University, Sherman has taught at Yale University, the University of Maryland, and John Hopkins University. She is also the inaugural holder of the Distinguished Chair in Ethics at the U.S. Naval Academy. Sherman has authored more than 30 scholarly articles and four books. Two of her books, The Fabric of Character and Making Necessity a Virtue received acclaim. A new book, entitled Smart Emotions, is due out soon. Sherman has received numerous awards including: the Washington Psychoanalytic Society’s Gary O. Morris prize for the most distinguished essay; Harvard University’s George Plympton Adams’ Prize; and numerous fellowships. She has appeared on various television and radio news and talk shows including PBS’ “Ethics and Religion Newsweekly,” ABC evening news, Fox TV, MSNBC, San Diego TV, and NPR-affiliate radio programs. Sherman has also served as a member on the board of directors to the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs; a special adviser to the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy; and consultant on ethics to the secretary of the Navy, commandant of the Marine Corps, and commander of Naval Education and Training.
