URI’s music camp keeps the right tempo for young musicians Camp runs July 9 through 21 KINGSTON, R.I. — June 6, 2000 — It’s kept the beat for more than 50 years and is still going strong. The URI Experiential Summer Program for Young Musicians seems to hit just the right note with teenage musicians. About 150 of them will spend from July 9 through 21 on URI’s Kingston campus. The music camp provides students entering grades 8 through 12, who have special interests in music or dance the opportunity to participate in areas rarely explored during regular school sessions. “What we do differently than many other camps is give students the opportunity to try other ways of making music. For instance, someone who plays in the band can sing in the chorus. Someone who plays in a jazz quartet can also try a chamber ensemble,” says Mark Conley, camp director. “It doesn’t matter if the student is going to make music a career or pastime, this camp provides a wonderful foundation.” Students with a recommendation from their music director or their school principal are invited to apply. While the majority of campers reside in URI’s residence halls during the 12-day camp, some prefer to commute. URI also offers a family plan; the resident plan cost $585 for the first child, $485 for the second. Commuters pay $300 for each child. The camp has top-notch faculty, many of whom are faculty members in URI’s Music Department. Their expertise range from voice, choir, chamber string ensembles, orchestra, jazz, piano, wind ensemble, concert band, and chamber wind ensembles. Large and small ensembles will perform during the week. Special guest artists and staff members will also perform. It’s not too late to sign up, but you must hurry.
